How working parents can maximize their custody rights

Working parents in Kentucky and throughout the country don’t necessarily have to choose between having a career and having a role in their children’s lives. Generally, custody rulings are based on what is good for the child. Therefore, if a working parent is willing to make adjustments for the child’s sake, there shouldn’t be a problem in obtaining or retaining parental rights.

For instance, a parent may want to adjust his or her work schedule to ensure that he or she can be at home in the morning or in the evening. Parents will also need to ensure that they can be home to watch their kids during school breaks or if they are home sick. Ideally, an individual will hire a babysitter or make other arrangements during times when he or she cannot be home to watch a child.

If a son or daughter is old enough, he or she may be able to stay home alone for an hour after school or until dinnertime. Those who are seeking custody of their kids are encouraged to talk with their employers as soon as possible. It is typically easier for companies to create flexible scheduling arrangements when they are given more time to do so. Regardless of their work situation, parents are encouraged to not ask for more parenting time than they can reasonably handle.

Individuals who are seeking legal or physical child custody rights will likely need to show that having them is in their child’s best interest. An attorney may suggest steps that parents can take to maximize their chances of retaining a role in their child’s life. These steps may include rearranging a work schedule, hiring a nanny or anything else that would make it easier to care for a son or daughter.
