Being an executor can be a challenging task. While you can claim some compensation for it, you are not really going to be rewarded financially, so it is something you should be doing because you want to. Not because you feel obligated to.
Here are some things that successful executors do to make sure that they properly fulfil their obligations:
1. Set time aside for the tasks
Trying to fit your executor’s duties around your regular schedule may be difficult or even impossible. You may need to carve out some dedicated time. This could mean asking someone to look after the children for a few weekends, to give you time to focus on the paperwork. It might mean telling your boss you need a few days off or won’t be available for overtime for a while. Sectioning off time will allow you to make better progress and maintain your train of thought.
2. Keep people informed
Beneficiaries and others affected by the estate plan have the right to be informed of how things are going. Being forward with this, rather than waiting till they ask, or getting annoyed when someone asks for an update can help maintain transparency and confidence.
3. Ask for help when needed
There may be some things that you struggle to understand. There may be some tasks that would take a long time to achieve on your own. Asking for help from others can make things better for everyone, as it increases the chance you can execute the will accurately and efficiently. While family members can be of great help in things such as compiling lists of assets and turning up contact details, technical questions may be best resolved with guidance from a legal professional.
